Love someone is a heartfelt and vulnerable track inspired by the poor treatment of asylum seekers in Australia. It has a simple, but essential message – all humans deserve to live peacefully, wherever that may be. Rich delivers this message poetically across a bed of soft electric guitar, gentle drums, and an exquisite trumpet solo, evoking influences such as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, and it feels like the perfect intersection of country and folk.
Love someone video
Love someone comes packing a minimal animated video by Matthew Lawes-Wickwar which starkly portrays the inhumane way we treat of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia. When they take their perilous journey and finally get to our shores, they are met with unlimited mandatory detention, the only country in the world to have something so strict. Further, the Australian government has shown a total lack of compassion for over a decade, where their stance has been: “If you come to Australia by boat, you will never get to stay”.
This has got to change. As a country, we must have more compassion and empathy than allowing this to happen to people who have been forced to run from their own country and are seeking safety and our help.
According to the latest government stats (30 Sept 2021), there are 1459 people being held in detention facilities here, and on average each has been there for 689 days – up from under an average of under 100 days eight to nine years ago. Even 100 days seems way two long – but close to any average of two years today, that’s totally nuts.
